82: | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2008 April 2 | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Periodic survey of non-resident hunters to determine their activities and harvests in 18-24 game animal hunting categories in Illinois, as well as their characteristics and attitudes toward specific wildlife issues. Abstract: A random sample of 2,000 potential non-resident hunters was selected from among purchasers of 2006 Illinois non-resident hunting licenses and habitat stamps. A 6-page questionnaire was successfully mailed to 1,960 of the 2,000 individuals. We received 1,254 returned questionnaires, 1,249 of which were usable, for a 64% response rate. Non-residents purchased 38,900 hunting licenses in Illinois in 2006-2007. Non-residents harvested more doves, deer and gray squirrels than any other game species, though low sample sizes for many species prevented accurate estimation of harvest. Twenty-nine non-resident hunters reported hunting on controlled hunting areas or shooting preserves in Illinois. These hunters most frequently hunted pheasants, quail and Chuckar partridge. Non-residents most commonly used the IDNR website or phone system to purchase their hunting licenses, habitat stamps and permits. Non-resident hunters reported little difficulty accessing hunting land in Illinois. Twenty percent of non-residents leased land to hunt in Illinois and 37% hired an outfitter to access land. One-fifth of respondents had hunted upland game in a state other than Illinois during 2006-2007. Non-residents most commonly hunted upland game in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Missouri. Respondents reported having access to private hunting land as their primary motivation for hunting upland game outside of Illinois. | | | Date Created: | 04 04 2008 | | | Agency ID: | W-112-R-16 | | | ISL ID: | 000000010992 Original UID: 5909 FIRST WORD: Results
83: | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | A random sample of 3,000 hunters was selected from the 2000 Illinois Habitat Stamp stubs and license sales. The sample was evenly divided between each sample frame (1,500 from each frame). Of the sample of 3,000 hunters, 2,912 questionnaires were deliverable. We received 2,142 (74%) returned questionnaires. License sales declined 1.4% from 1999 (294,000) to the 2000 season (290,000). From 1999-2000 to 2000-2001, harvests increased for 7 game animal categories (rabbit, pheasant, dove, gray partridge, squirrel, red fox, and coyote), decreased for 4 game animal categories (quail, woodcock, raccoon, and opossum), and did not change for 1 category (gray fox). Activities of upland hunters were profiled, as were attitudes toward hunting and general information about hunters. | | | Date Created: | 12 06 2006 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000001271 Original UID: 1181 FIRST WORD: 2000
84: | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | A stratified random sample of 892 persons who purchased a 2000 resident Illinois trapping license was surveyed after the furbearer trapping season. The U.S. Postal Service was successful in reaching 857 of the licensees, 621 (72%) of whom returned usable questionnaires. Trapping license sales declined 9% from 1999 (2,345 licenses) to 2000 (2,126 licenses). Trappers had traps set for an average of 23.4 days during the 2000-2001 season, and they harvested an estimated 96,480 furbearers (down 18% from the 118,326 harvested in 1999-2000). Data are provided for temporal distribution of trapping activities, types of traps used, participation in trapper education programs, and fur hunting by trappers. The opinions of trappers as to changes in furbearer populations and trapping effort are also presented, as is a profile of personal characteristics of trappers. | | | Date Created: | 12 07 2006 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000001306 Original UID: 1217 FIRST WORD: 2000

The sample was evenly divided between each sample frame (habitat stamps and hunting license). Of the sample of 3,000 hunters, 2,902 questionnaires were deliverable. We received 1,906 (66%) questionnaires, 1,883 of which were usable. License sales increased 2.1% from 2000 (290,000) to the 2001 season (296,000). From 2000-2001 to 2001-2002, harvests increased for 4 game animal categories (woodcock, gray squirrel, raccoon, and coyote), decreased for 8 game animal categories (rabbit, quail, pheasant, dove, gray partridge, fox squirrel, red fox, and opossum), and did not change for 1 category (gray fox). Activities of hunters and types of land hunted were profiled, as were attitudes toward hunting programs and general information about hunters. | | | Date Created: | 12 06 2006 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000001270 Original UID: 1180 FIRST WORD: 2001

The U.S. Postal Service successfully reached 858 of the licensees, 619 (72%) of whom returned usable questionnaires. Trapping license sales increased 25% from 2000 (2,126 licenses) to 2001 (2,668 licenses). Trappers had traps set for an average of 29.8 days during the 2001-2002 season, and they harvested an estimated 184,562 furbearers (up 91% from the 96,480 harvested in 2000-2001). Data are provided for temporal distribution of trapping activities, types of traps used, participation in trapper education programs, sources of furbearer and trapping information, and fur hunting by trappers. 87: | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2002 | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Harvest of light geese during the 2002 Illinois Conservation Action was estimated at 17,875 geese, a decrease or 18,955 geese from the 2001 harvest of 36,830. Participation increased to 5,107 hunters during 2002 compared to 4,665 hunters during 2001. Hunters spent an estimated 31,204 days afield during 2002, a decrease of 1,430 from the 32,634 days hunted during 2001. Unplugged shotguns were the method used most often (67%); however electronic calls and hunting after sunset were also used by more than 50% of hunters (62% and 54%, respectively). As with hunters responding to the 2001 survey, hunters who did not participate in the conservation action reported no geese in the area and no place to hunt as well as not interested as the main reasons they did not hunt light geese. | | | Date Created: | 08 20 2002 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000001285 Original UID: 1229 FIRST WORD: 2002
