 Volume/Number:  2009 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Investigations at two Fox Lake are dry cleaner operations one currently operating and one closed have identified contamination in shallow groundwater that could pose a potential health threat to private well users in the area. Bavaros Cleaners is located at 41 E. Grand Avenue, which has been the location of a dry cleaning operation since approximately 1986. The site is approximately 5400 square feet, on which a one-story brick building currently houses the dry cleaning business at the north end and a restaurant at the south end.

General Electric Morrison Facility

 Volume/Number:  2011 December
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The General Electric Company (GE) located at 709 West Wall Street (Site) operated a manufacturing facility in Morrison, Illinois, from the late 1940s until 2010. The facility manufactured components for motors and motor control equipment that were assembled at other locations. Prior to 1994, GE used chlorinated organic solvents for removing oil from the manufactured components prior to use in the final product. A small immersion tank degreaser and a larger continuous process line degreaser were located in the Main Building. While no longer in operation, GE continues to take responsibility for facility-related solvents found in soils and groundwater. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.

Illinois EPA Seals Gilberts/Kedzie Property

 Volume/Number:  2004 February
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  In late 2003, Illinois EPA responded to an emergency at an old dump site in Gilberts. The remains of an old lead acid batter recycling operation had caught fire. Noxious smoke caused the evacuation of nearby residents. Although the immediate health threat seemed to have been abated, Illinois EPA decided to collect samples to determine if any contaminants were present.

Gilberts/Kedzie Property Former Battery Recycling Facility

 Volume/Number:  2005 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  In 2004, both Illinois EPA and U.S. EPA investigated the location of a former battery cracking and recycling operation in Gilberts. The main site is located immediately north of the intersection of Railroad and Mill Streets bounded by Galligan Road on the east and the Chicago and Northwestern Railway on the west. It is in an area that is mostly wooded near both industrial and residential properties. Lead acid batteries were cracked open to recover the lead. Some of the lead seeped into the ground along with the acid contained in the batteries. Extensive environmental sampling last summer identified a six-acre area of gross contamination (mainly lead). Later, a second area of contamination was discovered to the southwest, where the Village of Gilberts Public Works building is now located, west of the railroad tracks - this is known as the Tower Hill Road site.

Groundwater Contamination at former dry cleaner site: 3004 W. Elm St., McHenry, Illinois

 Volume/Number:  2007 January
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  This property is located on the east side of the Fox River in McHenry on Elm Street (Route 120). Gem Cleaners occupied the site from 1970 to 1977, after which it was occupied by carpet dealers, an automotive repair facility, and a tire store. The site is approximately 1/3 of an acre on which a 4,782 square-foot building is currently a car rental business. The site is located in a mixed industrial, commercial and residential area. Parts of the area are incorporated, and some are not. Currently, the public water supply is only available to some properties along Route 120, where there is a water main in place. Most of the homes and businesses use private wells for their water source. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.

Groundwater Contamination in McHenry, Illinois

 Volume/Number:  2007 September
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Additional testing performed in February 2007 by the McHenry County Health Department confirmed the results from the January 2007 well testing and identified two wells contaminated with vinyl chloride. The well owners were advised by county and state health agencies not to drink the well water. Both of these wells were west of the Inverse Investments site. Five other wells had detections of vinyl chloride or cis-1,2-Dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE), which are breakdown products of solvents. Two private wells showed gasoline-related contamination at low levels, and nine wells showed no VOC contamination. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.

Groundwater Contamination Site near Former Dry Cleaner Site

 Volume/Number:  2009 December
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Groundwater contamination appears to extend beyond the boundaries of both properties to the west towards the Fox River. The contamination is located in mixed industrial, commercial and residential areas. Most of the homes and businesses in the areas use private wells for their water source, since a public water supply is presently available only to a limited number of properties along Route 120. McHenry County Health Department conducted extensive sampling in 2007-2008 of area private wells for site-related contaminants. Illinois EPA conducted an investigation and additional sampling in 2008. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.

Mobile and Ohio Railyard Site Former Greenberg Salvage Property

 Volume/Number:  1999 October
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Cox Trucking, located in Murphysboro, Illinois, was issued a Violation Notice by the Jackson County Health Department in December 1998. Materials from drums were reportedly discarded on property located at the northeast corner of the intersection of 19th and Gartside Streets. Soil samples taken from the area where the drums were dumped showed elevated levels of lead apparently not related to the drum contents. The lead contamination was found on the property (2.34 acres of land) that Cox Trucking previously purchased from a former salvage yard to provide additional parking for their trucking operation.

Mobile and Ohio Railyard Site

 Volume/Number:  2000 February
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Properties on both the north and south side of Gartside Street in Murphysboro were previously operated as the Greenberg Junkyard and as a railyard. Battery plates and other debris found there suggested that lead contamination deposited in this area was from battery cracking at the junkyard and other operations at the railyard. Illinois EPA investigated the site at the request of the Jackson County Health Department and conducted initial soil testing in June 1999.

Harristown Terminal (Pipeline Site) Buckeye Partners LP

 Volume/Number:  2006 June
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Workers at the facility reportedly became aware of a leak at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2006 after noticing a problem from a gauge on one of the storage tanks. The spilled product was within an earthen reservoir around tanks on the property. Emergency crews have worked around the clock since the incident to clean up the spill. An additional area of contamination was detected late Monday about one mile northwest of the site where a field tile was releasing gasoline to a drainage ditch near a small pond. Surface water in the area flows west-northwest. Another crew was dispatched to work on cleaning up that area, and oil booms were placed across a creek at various points to stop the spill from traveling further west until it could be cleaned up.

Harristown Terminal (Pipeline Site) Buckeye Partners LP

 Volume/Number:  2006 June
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  A leak from storage tank piping on June 12, 2006 allowed approximately 150,000 gallons of product to fill an earthen reservoir around tanks on the property, and most of it infiltrated the ground. Later, product was found floating on groundwater underneath the site, and field tiles had transported some of the material to a field southeast of the site. Surface water in the area flows west-northwest. Buckeye hired a contractor to clean up product that had flowed to a drainage ditch near a small pond one mile northwest. The contractor used oil booms to contain the spill, skimmed it off the water, and removed it for proper disposal.

Hegeler Zinc

 Volume/Number:  2003 June
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The Illinois EPA has performed a comprehensive investigation of the Hegeler Zinc Site and surrounding area. Illinois EPA collected on-site soil, waste (slag), sediment and groundwater samples. Off-site sampling included residential soil and sediment samples. Following the investigation, and based on sampling results, Illinois EPA requested that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) engage in a removal action. The initial stage of this process was to install a six-foot chain link fence around the site to prevent trespassers from coming in contact with the on-site soil and waste material. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.
