| 101: | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 1995 January | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Matthiessen and Hegeler is an inactive zinc rolling mill and smelter that operated from 1858 to 1978. The 160 acre property is located on the west side of the Little Vermilion River in LaSalle, Illinois. In December 1993, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) collected soil and sediment samples from the site and from surrounding properties. These samples included three sediment samples from the Little Vermilion River, seven soil samples from the site property, 13 off-site soil samples, and two background samples 1 1/2 miles north of the site. The sample results will be used to make a preliminary evaluation of possible environmental impacts from past Matthiessen and Hegeler operations. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #1 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042412 Original UID: 21940 FIRST WORD: Matthiessen | |
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2003 September | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has announced that the former Matthiessen and Hegeler Zinc property has been finalized on the National Priorities List (NPL), which is sometimes called the Superfund list. Matthiessen and Hegeler is the site of a former zinc smelter located in LaSalle, Illinois. The larger image referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #2 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042413 Original UID: 21941 FIRST WORD: Matthiessen
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2011 October | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The DePue/New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Corporation site is located along the north side of the Village of DePue and constitutes roughly one half of the village land mass. Initial plans for investigation and cleanup of the site were organized by unit, e.g., plant site soils, Interim Water Treatment Plant, Phosphogypsum Stack, Zinc Slag Pile, Lithipone Ridges and South Ditch. As the cleanup plans for the South Ditch progressed, this organization was found to be inappropriate for the complex site and the site was divided into five operable units (OUs) for investigation and remediation. The printable map, records of decision, site schedule, and legislative updates referenced in the fact sheet will be included as separate pdf attachments. The numbered fact sheets and responsiveness summary will be cataloged separately. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042415 Original UID: 21947 FIRST WORD: New
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2006 January | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Between 1969 and 1988, the 47-acre landfill received general refuse and industrial wastes including paint sludge, volatile organic chemicals, asbestos and liquids containing heavy metals. The site was not properly closed and capped, resulting in a 5 to 10-acre depression in the middle of the landfill. This depression collected water, which drained into the landfill, resulting in over one hundred leachate seeps. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet | | | ISL ID: | 000000042419 Original UID: 21942 FIRST WORD: MIG/DeWane
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2007 January | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The imminent threat from the former Milton School is the potential for asbestos exposure and the physical hazards to trespassers and nearby residents. Currently collapsed floors, roofs and walls make it impossible to secure or abate this building; therefore removal is the only option for eliminating the threat. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #1 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042420 Original UID: 21943 FIRST WORD: Former
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2002 October | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | This fact sheet has been prepared by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA). This fact sheet is intended to address concerns about Lead, Cadmium, Beryllium, Chromium, Arsenic, Mercury and Nickel originating from the coal waste piles at the Monterey No. 2 Mine, near Albers. In addition, the clean up activities being undertaken by Monterey Coal Company (Monterey) and its parent company Exxon- Mobil, to protect the environment will be discussed. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042421 Original UID: 21944 FIRST WORD: Monterey
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2007 April | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), prepared this fact sheet to address concerns about groundwater contamination originating from the former Monterey Coal Mine #2, now known as ExxonMobil Coal USA, Inc. (ExxonMobil), and potential effects on the surrounding private wells. The two printable maps referenced in the fact sheet will be included in separate pdf attachments. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042422 Original UID: 21945 FIRST WORD: Monterey
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 1992 October | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | In March 1992, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) collected samples in DePue including samples of soil, sediment, and surface water. The information from these samples will be used in making a preliminary evaluation of possible environmental effects of past New Jersey Zinc and Mobil Mining and Minerals operations. Twenty soil samples were collected from residential yards. Three sediment and three surface water samples were collected from Lake DePue and the ditch leading to the lake. Samples were taken as background from Turner Lake and Tiskilwa for comparison. Ten samples were collected from the New Jersey Zinc and Mobil Mining and Minerals site. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #1 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042423 Original UID: 21948 FIRST WORD: New
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 1995 September | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Many of the plant operations took place before most environmental regulations (see chart), so a potential existed for releases to air, water, and land. Preliminary Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) sampling, conducted in 1992 and 1993, indicated the presence of metals in onsite and offsite soil (including residential yards), surface water, and sediments. These metals include arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, silver, sodium, and zinc. These metals occur naturally in the environment, but the samples from the facility indicate elevated levels when compared to samples collected from a nearby community. The larger map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #2 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042424 Original UID: 21949 FIRST WORD: New

 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 1997 February | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | This fact sheet describes the interim water treatment system that the DePue Group ( Horsehead Resources Development Co., Inc., Mobil Oil Corporation, and Viacom International Inc.,) is constructing to reduce the levels of metals in groundwater (water beneath ground surface) and surface water discharging into DePue Lake. These metals have accumulated in the soil of the former New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical site from years of zinc smelting and other industrial processes. The metals are either leached (dissolved) or washed into the water on particles of metal-bearing soil. Occasionally, some of this water has flowed over the Marquette Street sidewalk. 113: | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 1999 September | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Because industries at the site have been in operation since the early 1900s, the sources of possible contamination are not fully understood. For example, there may be areas of old spills or disposal with which we are unfamiliar. We also do not fully understand how and where these chemicals have moved through the air, surface water, groundwater, and soil. A phased approach is necessary so that sample results from Phase 1 can govern the location of Phase 2 samples, etc. This phased approach will be continued until the full extent of contamination is understood. 114: | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2002 September | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) are proposing a remedy for the unnatural sediments in the South Ditch at the DePue-New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Site in DePue, Illinois. This proposed remedy would remove the unnatural sediment by a combination of hydraulic and mechanical dredging, stabilizing the removed sediments and containing them in an on-site unit until a final remedy is selected for the much larger quantities of similar material on and around the plant site. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #7 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042429 Original UID: 21954 FIRST WORD: New
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2002 September | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | Historically, the ditch has received runoff from the former plant property. Because of the nature of past plant operations, the runoff contained high levels of metals that contaminated sediments in the ditch. These contaminated sediments are called "unnatural" sediments. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | | | | ISL ID: | 000000042430 Original UID: 21955 FIRST WORD: You
 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2003 September | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA or Agency) has chosen removal of the South Ditch unnatural sediments and on-site storage of the sediment in an interim containment cell. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) concurs with this decision. The agencies signed a record of decision in September 2003 to document this decision. The Illinois EPA has written a responsiveness summary that summarizes the comments received during the comment period and the Illinois EPA and U.S. EPA's responses to these comments. This summary, as well as the South Ditch Record of Decision, is in the Selby Township Library in DePue for public review. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #9 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042431 Original UID: 21956 FIRST WORD: Update

 | | Title: | | | | Volume/Number: | 2005 May | | | Issuing Agency: | | | | Description: | This fact sheet is a project update about work to be conducted in the vicinity of the New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Superfund site in the Village of DePue beginning in May and extending into the summer of 2005. The results of historical soil sampling by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) indicate that elevated levels of metals have been detected in residential and non-residential soils around the DePue site. In 1995, the State of Illinois and the potentially responsible parties (PRPs)1 entered into an Interim Consent Order (ICO) to conduct Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) activities, including investigation and remediation of off-site soils surrounding the Former Plant Site Area. Given the existing data, additional investigations will be conducted in the Village by the PRPs. | | | Date Created: | 05 24 2012 | | | Agency ID: | Fact Sheet #11 | | | ISL ID: | 000000042434 Original UID: 21959 FIRST WORD: New
