Verification of the potential yield and chemical quality of the shallow dolomite aquifer in DuPage County, Illinois

 Volume/Number:  1981
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Because of its responsibility for allocating the Lake Michigan water which Illinois is permitted to divert from the Great Lakes Basin, the Illinois Division of Water Resources must consider alternative sources of water available to the Chicago metropolitan region. In early 1979, the Division contracted with the Illinois State Water Survey to study the shallow dolomite aquifer in DuPage County, an important alternative source, to verify its potential yield. The plan of the investigation was to analyze the effects of continually increasing pumpage, and to identify areas of existing and potential problems and areas where additional pumpage can be developed. In the summer of 1979, as part of this study, a detailed data collection program in the shallow dolomite was conducted over a 700-square-mile area, shown in figure 1. The area centered on DuPage County but also included parts of west and northwest Cook County, east Kane County, northeast Kendall County, and north Will County. It was bounded on the west by the Fox River and on the east and southeast by the Des Plaines River. Data obtained included pumpage from major water users and more than 1200 water level measurements. In addition, 282 water samples were collected for subsequent analysis.

VOC Emissions from Gas Powered Leaf Blowers in the Chicago Metropolitan Region

 Volume/Number:
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The Waste Management and Research Center estimated emissions from leaf blowers under three different policy scenarios for the Chicago metropolitan region: (1) a baseline that assumes no local ordinances have been enacted, (2) the adoption of an aggressive ordinance, which prohibits the use of leaf blowers between May 1 and September 30 and (3) the adoption of a moderate ordinance, which accelerates the purchase of low emission, gasoline powered leaf blowers. Under an aggressive policy scenario, VOC emissions from leaf blowers can be cut by over 64% from the baseline scenario. Under the moderate scenario, VOC emission will be reduced, but with diminishing effectiveness. For example, VOC emissions would be reduced by 7.3% from baseline in 2008 and only by 3.7% from baseline in 2009. The villages of Lake Bluff, Wilmette and Oak Park have enacted leaf blower restrictions. Wilmette prohibits the use of gasoline-powered leaf blowers between May 15 and September 30 and restricts their use to 30 minutes on acre lots or smaller during the remainder of the year. The Wilmette ordinance closely resembles the aggressive policy. Oak Park prohibits the use of all gasoline powered leaf blowers from emanating more than 65 decibels or failing to satisfy the most stringent federal regulations between June 1 and October 1. The Oak Park ordinance closely resembles the moderate policy. The Lake Bluff ordinance prohibits the use of gasoline powered leaf blowers early in the evening and at night. The ordinance also prohibits the simultaneous use of more than one gasoline powered leaf blower on a lot during the summer.

Title:

Vegetation and Flora of the Sand Deposits of the Mississippi River Valley in Northwestern Illinois

 Volume/Number:  37 2006 6 October
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Irregularly published technical series. Abstract: This study was undertaken to determine vascular plant species composition, vegetation structure, and floristic quality of the major plant communities in the windblown sand deposits of northwestern Illinois during the growing seasons of 2002 through 2005. The major plant communities of the Ayers Sand Prairie Nature Preserve in Carroll County, Big River State Forest in Henderson County, Lost Mound Unit of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge in Carroll and Jo Daviess counties, and the Thomson-Fulton Sand Prairie Nature Preserve located in Whiteside County were examined and the importance values determined for the plant species present. Located on broad terraces of the Mississippi River, these nature preserves and natural areas are remnants of a larger grassland/savanna/forest complex that contained extensive marsh; wet, mesic, and dry sand prairie; sand savanna; and sand forest communities. Most of the sand deposits are now cultivated and the original vegetation is found only in protected remnants, some of which are relatively large. The mature dry sand prairies were dominated by Schizachyrium scoparium; other important species were Opuntia macrorhiza, Dichanthelium villosissimum, Ambrosia psilostachya, and Tephrosia virginiana. Other assemblages of prairie and exotic species were encountered in successional sand prairie communities. Generally, the mature prairie communities in these preserves and natural areas had 35 or more species present in the study plots. Savanna and closed canopy forest communities were also examined. The dry sand savannas were dominated by Quercus velutina and Q. marilandica, dry sand forests were dominated by Q. velutina, and dry-mesic sand forests were dominated by Q. alba and Q. velutina.

Villa Park Police Station Urban BMP Demonstration Project: A Project to Demonstrate Integration of Green Roof, Permeable Paving, and Bioswale Urban Runoff Systems

 Volume/Number:  2005 July 19
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Villa Park is in the Salt Creek watershed (WSID ILGL09) along segment GL09. This segment of the Creek is rated as partial support for overall use and aquatic life and nonsupport for swimming according to the 2000 Illinois Water Quality Report. The impairments are reported to be caused by priority organics, PCBs, excess nutrients including phosphorus, nitrogen and nitrates, salinity/TDS/chlorides, flow alteration, and excessive algal growth/chlorophyll a. The sources of pollutants are listed as municipal point sources including combined sewer overflows, collection system failures, urban runoff/storm-sewers, hydrologic/habitat modifications, upstream impoundment, flow regulation and modification, and contaminated sediments. Many of the causes and sources listed above are related to urban runoff, which is largely unregulated at this time. Thus, implementing and providing examples of best management practices to cleanse and reduce volumes of urban stormwater runoff is greatly needed in this largely built out watershed.
