 Volume/Number:  2011 December 16
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The Illinois Hospital Report Card and Consumer Guide to Health Care website now contains information about the number of surgical infections in Illinois hospitals. The new report shows infections following coronary artery bypass graft and total knee replacement surgeries that occurred in Illinois hospitals between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. The surgical-site infection rate in Illinois hospitals was not significantly different from national rate. This is the first time this information has been available to the public. This information will help hospitals monitor their infection control practices and highlight areas where they can make improvements.

New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical: Site Summary

 Volume/Number:  2011 October
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The DePue/New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Corporation site is located along the north side of the Village of DePue and constitutes roughly one half of the village land mass. Initial plans for investigation and cleanup of the site were organized by unit, e.g., plant site soils, Interim Water Treatment Plant, Phosphogypsum Stack, Zinc Slag Pile, Lithipone Ridges and South Ditch. As the cleanup plans for the South Ditch progressed, this organization was found to be inappropriate for the complex site and the site was divided into five operable units (OUs) for investigation and remediation. The printable map, records of decision, site schedule, and legislative updates referenced in the fact sheet will be included as separate pdf attachments. The numbered fact sheets and responsiveness summary will be cataloged separately.

New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Sample Results

 Volume/Number:  1992 October
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  In March 1992, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) collected samples in DePue including samples of soil, sediment, and surface water. The information from these samples will be used in making a preliminary evaluation of possible environmental effects of past New Jersey Zinc and Mobil Mining and Minerals operations. Twenty soil samples were collected from residential yards. Three sediment and three surface water samples were collected from Lake DePue and the ditch leading to the lake. Samples were taken as background from Turner Lake and Tiskilwa for comparison. Ten samples were collected from the New Jersey Zinc and Mobil Mining and Minerals site.

New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Site

 Volume/Number:  1995 September
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Many of the plant operations took place before most environmental regulations (see chart), so a potential existed for releases to air, water, and land. Preliminary Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) sampling, conducted in 1992 and 1993, indicated the presence of metals in onsite and offsite soil (including residential yards), surface water, and sediments. These metals include arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, silver, sodium, and zinc. These metals occur naturally in the environment, but the samples from the facility indicate elevated levels when compared to samples collected from a nearby community. The larger map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.

New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Site Interim Water Treatment System

 Volume/Number:  1997 February
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  This fact sheet describes the interim water treatment system that the DePue Group ( Horsehead Resources Development Co., Inc., Mobil Oil Corporation, and Viacom International Inc.,) is constructing to reduce the levels of metals in groundwater (water beneath ground surface) and surface water discharging into DePue Lake. These metals have accumulated in the soil of the former New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical site from years of zinc smelting and other industrial processes. The metals are either leached (dissolved) or washed into the water on particles of metal-bearing soil. Occasionally, some of this water has flowed over the Marquette Street sidewalk. The larger diagram referenced in this fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.

New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Site Phase 1 Site-Wide Remedial Investigation

 Volume/Number:  1999 September
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Because industries at the site have been in operation since the early 1900s, the sources of possible contamination are not fully understood. For example, there may be areas of old spills or disposal with which we are unfamiliar. We also do not fully understand how and where these chemicals have moved through the air, surface water, groundwater, and soil. A phased approach is necessary so that sample results from Phase 1 can govern the location of Phase 2 samples, etc. This phased approach will be continued until the full extent of contamination is understood. The larger map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.

New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Site Illinois EPA Proposes Remedy for Unnatural Sediments in South Ditch at the DePue-New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical National Priorities List Site

 Volume/Number:  2002 September
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) are proposing a remedy for the unnatural sediments in the South Ditch at the DePue-New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Site in DePue, Illinois. This proposed remedy would remove the unnatural sediment by a combination of hydraulic and mechanical dredging, stabilizing the removed sediments and containing them in an on-site unit until a final remedy is selected for the much larger quantities of similar material on and around the plant site.

New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Superfund Site Off-Site: Soil Sampling

 Volume/Number:  2005 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  This fact sheet is a project update about work to be conducted in the vicinity of the New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Superfund site in the Village of DePue beginning in May and extending into the summer of 2005. The results of historical soil sampling by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) and Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) indicate that elevated levels of metals have been detected in residential and non-residential soils around the DePue site. In 1995, the State of Illinois and the potentially responsible parties (PRPs)1 entered into an Interim Consent Order (ICO) to conduct Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) activities, including investigation and remediation of off-site soils surrounding the Former Plant Site Area. Given the existing data, additional investigations will be conducted in the Village by the PRPs.

 Volume/Number:  2009 July
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  The former New Jersey Zinc/Mobil Chemical Superfund site is located in the Village of DePue in Bureau County and consists of approximately 950 acres. The former zinc smelter plant began in the early 1900s with operations including zinc smelting, and included sulfuric acid production, lithopone paint pigment production and zinc dust production. A diammonium phosphate fertilizer plant began operations in the 1960s. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.
