IDPH's Letter To The Editor (Smoking)

 Volume/Number:  2011 November 8
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  This week, a U.S. District Court blocked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from requiring tobacco companies to include graphic warning labels on all cigarette packages and advertisements beginning next September. These requirements were to be the first change to U.S. cigarette warning labels in 25 years, following the 2009 decision by Congress to make the FDA responsible for regulating tobacco products. Although cigarette packs already carry text warnings from the U.S. Surgeon General, the new warnings would have been larger and contained color graphics depicting the health consequences of smoking, including diseased lungs, dead bodies and rotting teeth.

Idling Gets You Nowhere (Audio)

The Clean School Bus Program provides funding to assist schools and school districts to reduce emissions from diesel-powered school buses. But perhaps the easiest thing that schools can do to reduce emissions is to create and enforce an anti-idling policy. Hear from school districts in Illinois who have taken a pro-active approach to stop school bus idling. (Audio 8:27)

It has facilitated extending the wealth of Illinois' library resources to all residents in the state, regardless of the location. The first year of ILDS operation has also demonstrated the feasibility of such a program and has generated what may be valuable information for others planning to initiate or manage a similar service.

Institutional Reform and State Government Corruption: An Analysis of Institutional Reforms Proposed by the Illinois Reform Commission

 Volume/Number:  2010 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  This paper will explore the changes proposed by the recent Illinois Reform Commission, many of which have been tried in other states. Within the political science literature there is much discussion on how these policies work. Recent polls in Illinois show that voters of the state are deeply dissatisfied with their state government (Crow, 2010; Leonard, 2010, The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, 2010). Thus, any measures which may reduce the level of alienation and distrust are worth examining. This paper will review the available and relevant literature on the Illinois Reform Commissions recommendations and apply it to Illinois in anattempt to weigh the possible benefits of adopting such policies.
