Interstate Heat Treating, Inc. Site

 Volume/Number:  2003 August
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Responding to a citizen complaint about abandoned automobiles at the site, Illinois EPA inspectors visited the facility with Vermillion County Public Health officials and discovered abandoned drums, tanks and other containers that might contain hazardous substances. Several drums within the building were labeled "Barium Chloride," which is a hazardous substance that may cause injury from ingestion, inhalation or skin contact. Illinois EPA staff took more than 20 samples of the contents of storage drums, process tanks and other containers on three occasions from July 2 through July 24, 2003. Analytical results revealed some hazardous substances at the site. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.

Jennison-Wright Corporation Superfund Site

 Volume/Number:  2008 June
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  In 1992, approximately $150,000 of trust fund money from the bankruptcy was used to alleviate the spread of contamination. In 1994, Federal money was used to conduct a non-time critical removal action which included installation of a six-foot chain link fence; installation of a protective cap over the "Jennite pit"; excavation and disposal of soils around the upright storage tanks and railroad cars and subsequent decontamination and dismantling of those storage vessels; removal and treatment of various on-site waste materials and contaminated soil; and characterization and proper disposal of the material within the drums inside the on-site Transite building. The approximate cost of the non-time critical removal action was $800,000. In 2003 and 2004, Federal monies (approximately $1,200,000) were again used to complete the demolition portion, including asbestos removal, of the selected site remedy and to prepare the site for further remedial action. The 2005 remedial action included extensive remedial activities in the portion of the site located north of 22nd Street, specifically, the removal and hazardous waste disposal of on-site wastes and continued monitoring of the in situ biological groundwater treatment. Remedial activities associated with soil for this northern parcel are essentially completed, and the majority of the groundwater beneath this parcel has been successfully remediated.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) Groundwater Contamination Investigation: Eastern Lisle and Nearby Affected Areas

 Volume/Number:  2001 October
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  During the late summer and early fall of 2000, a number of residents with private wells in an eastern Lisle neighborhood south of Ogden Avenue (Area A on enclosed Map) had their wells sampled by a private environmental contractor. By mid-November, more than 35 residential wells had been sampled by various parties.Trichloroethylene (TCE) had been detected in at least 20 wells, and it had been found in excess of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Drinking Water Standard for public water supplies (5 parts per billion) in six wells. The concentrations ranged from just above the detection limit to almost 20 parts per billion in one well. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included in a separate pdf attachment.

Former Magnolia School

 Volume/Number:  2005 September
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Based on the human health threat from exposure posed by the dilapidated, asbestos-containing former school located at the corner of Maple and Monroe in Magnolia, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) will demolish the building and cleanup the site using both Federal and State funding. Due to the condition of this former school, it is highly likely that asbestos fibers are being released to the environment allowing for an exposure to humans. Therefore, this exposure warrants corrective action.

Investigation at Markham Illegal Dumping Site

 Volume/Number:  2010 May
 Issuing Agency:
Description:  Illinois EPA was alerted by the City of Markham to a tire fire that began on April 1, 2010 at an illegal dump site in/near Markham in Cook County. The 12-acre-plus dumping areas within the site are bounded by 159th Street on the north, Dixie Highway on the east, the Calumet-Union Drainage Canal on the south, and Western Avenue on the west (see map). It appears that various dumping activities have been going on there for many years. Recent inspections by Illinois EPA revealed discarded mobile homes, automobile parts, boats, tires, drums and totes of unknown liquids and solids, other containers with residue of construction materials, unidentified gas cylinders, unknown liquid and solid spills on the ground, swimming pool chemicals and various construction and demolition debris. The printable map referenced in the fact sheet will be included as a separate pdf attachment.
