Montgomery Man To Be Named Illinois Veteran of the Month

 Description:  Herschel Luckinbill served as a Machinist Mate in the Navy in the early days of the Vietnam War on the USS OBrien (DD-725), a Sumner-class destroyer with a distinguished service record which began off the Normandy coast on D-Day. During his second cruise on the OBrien in Vietnamese waters on December 23, 1966, the ship took three direct hits from North Vietnamese coastal batteries, killing two sailors and wounding four others. Luckinbill survived a near miss as one of the deadly shells struck near his assigned bunk, killing another sailor. He completed his enlistment, having earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
