- The Illinois Municipal Brownfields Redevelopment Grant Program (MBRGP) offers grants worth a maximum of $240,000 each to municipalities to assist in site investigation activities, development of cleanup objectives, and performance of cleanup activities. Brownfields are abandoned or underused industrial and/or commercial properties that are contaminated (or thought to be contaminated) and have an active potential for redevelopment. Municipal Brownfields Redevelopment Grants may be used to perform environmental site assessments to determine whether a brownfields property is contaminated, and if so, to what extent. These grants may also be used to develop cleanup objectives, prepare cleanup plans, and fund actual cleanup activities. Grant recipients are required to share in any grant award through a 70/30 match and to spend the grant within three years.
