The trend toward coal mining methods that use planned subsidence continues in Illinois and elsewhere in the United States. This circular was produced to respond to community concerns about the possible effects of underground mining and surface subsidence (the sinking of the land surface). The information in this publication is based on a 9-year study undertaken with the support of the Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program. The research investigated the possible effects of mining and geologic conditions on the states water resources, farmland productivity, and structures.
